As of Thursday April 1, Îles de la Madeleine Islands are now connected with the mainland by weekly bus transportation toward Quebec City and the Maritimes with connections to Montreal and other cities. The new transport is offered by Autobus les Sillons, a local company in collaboration with the Québec Transport Ministry, the Municipality of the Islands, CTMA group and Tourisme Iles de la Madeleine.
Considering the transport problems experienced in the archipelago over the past few years, the president of Autobus les Sillons, Nicolas Cormier, had the ingenious idea to start up this service by offering other options to travellers wishing to come to the Islands.
The departure from Quebec City will be every Friday evening at 10 pm. It will be possibile to pick up travellers in Riviere du Loup, Edmundston, Fredericton, Moncton and Charlottetown whose final destination is Îles de la Madeleine. The arrival at Iles de la Madeleine is scheduled for Saturday 7 pm.
The departure from the Islands will be on Thursday morning with an arrival in Quebec City in the evening. It will also be possible to travel directly to the above-mentioned cities. There is a partnership with the Group Orleans Express and Acadian bus companies for the passengers who are travelling to Montreal or other cities in the Maritime provinces.
Autobus les Sillons hopes to reach its set objective. The transport will become permanent on a yearly base and will improve the destination's offer while at the same time giving some travelling options to the local people who wish to travel outside the Islands.
Autobus les Sillons is a family-run company that has been in bus transportation for over 20 years. Since 1996, they have been the representative for the Quebec Automobile Insurance Corporation for vehicle inspection on the territory of Îles de la Madeleine. In 2002, they began a sightseeing tour business and were awarded a gold medal in 2009 at the National Grands Prix du Tourisme in the tourist services category. In March 2010 they were honored at the Regional Grand Prix du Tourisme in the same category.
