In the Îles, drinking water resources are limited. The population is supplied with water from an underground aquifer that is balanced on saltwater. It is imperative to maintain the fresh water balance at a certain level to prevent it from reaching the critical threshold and being contaminated by saltwater infiltration.
Five municipal drinking water distribution systems are present on the islands of Cap aux Meules, Havre Aubert, Havre aux Maisons, Grande Entrée, and Île d'Entrée. These systems exploit groundwater using 38 pumping wells. Residents are supplied with drinking water by the Municipality of Îles-de-la-Madeleine.
The drinking water of the archipelago is of high quality. As proof, the Municipality of Îles-de-la-Madeleine won the grand jury prize at the Quebec Municipal Drinking Water Competition in 2014.
Here are some tips to help you enjoy quality water while preserving the resource:
In addition to reducing waste, your reusable bottle allows you to have access to fresh water at all times. Don't have a reusable water bottle? Many businesses on the Îles sell different models. You will undoubtedly find one you like. Plus, it will remind you of good memories while encouraging the reduction of single-use containers.
Be mindful of your drinking water usage. Fresh water is a fragile resource on the Îles de la Madeleine, and it should be used wisely and without unnecessary waste.
At festivals and events, use water stations. They help reduce environmental impact while providing free fresh water directly on-site.
By following these practices, you too can contribute to the sustainable use of the resource, allowing the locals to continue benefiting from accessible and quality drinking water, while enhancing your own experience.
