Surf aux Îles de la Madeleine

The temperature of the seawater around the islands usually stands at around 18°C (64°F) in mid-August. Water in lagoons and bays can reach temperatures higher than 20°C (68°F). Wind is a major factor when choosing a place to swim: enjoy the windiest days during your stay to have fun in the waves.

Surfing is an activity that is gaining popularity year after year on the Islands. Although the confitions are not those that can be found in well-knowned destinations for practicing this sport, the fall and winter conditions lend themselves well. A small community of surfers sometimes meet in different places, depending on the winds and waves. Make sure you have the right equipment according to the season to enjoy the waves safely!

Beware of treacherous currents

It can be very dangerous to go swimming on windy days even if you are a good swimmer. Waves are often the sign of strong currents along the coast. On windy days, swim only on beaches with a lifeguard, never alone, or stay out of the water entirely.
