The culture of the Îles de la Madeleine is fascinating. A trip to the Islands does indeed reveal a wonderfully unique landscape, but it also offers an unexpected encounter with their singular maritime culture, the pride and joy of the 12 300 inhabitants of the archipelago.
The Îles de la Madeleine belong to Quebec, but their roots lie deep in Acadia, in a history strongly influenced by shipwrecks and by the audacity of the people who have struggled for 200 years to build a vital community in the heart of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The Acadian legacy shows up wherever you look : in the music, in the traditions and in the seductively musical accents of the local dialect that delights the visitor's ear from the first hearing. The Islands are another world entirely.
On the Islands, nothing is quite the same : life flows along at a different pace, traditions and music are everywhere. Any trip to the Magdalen Archipelago must necessarily involve the arts. There are many artists and artisans in the Islands, expressing themselves in a wide variety of disciplines: painting, sculpture, photography, music, theatre, storytelling, circus arts.
You can meet these artists in their workshops and galleries, go to the shows, participate in cultural events, marvel at the history of the Islands and discover the tight link binding their rich heritage to the traditional trades of the sea which have so profoundly influenced the lives of the Islanders.
