The municipal organization has undergone many transformations since the creation in 1846 of the first municipality of Îles-de-la-Madeleine. Since 2005, the archipelago is divided in two municipalities: the Municipality of Îles-de-la-Madeleine and the Municipality of Grosse-Île. The two municipalities are working in partnership within the agglomeration council of the Islands.
